Golf Tip: Chip and Run With a 3 Wood

BH Updated

This tip will help you with a tricky shot that happens all too often.

This tip takes us to the base of the green on hole #2 at the Conservatory Course at Hammock Beach Resort.  If your second shot comes up short of this green, your ball will more than likely roll back down the fairway cut and into the tightly mown collection area.  With the green and pin located well above the ball, the impending shot is daunting for the majority of golfers.

This shot is difficult as you are challenged to get the ball up and over the false front of the green.  Many times I see players trying to lob the ball up over the hill with a sand wedge, resulting in leaving the ball short and rolling back to the golfer’s feet.

The secret to this shot is to play a low running shot, not a high lob shot.  Choosing a 6-iron or putter are good choices, but next time try your 3-wood instead.

Simply play the shot as you would a basic chip shot.  In your setup, place the ball position in the back of your stance and let the face of the club stay square to the target.  Your swing is similar to a regular chip shot where you hinge your wrists on the backswing and hold the finish on the follow through.

By using a 3 wood for this shot you will let the mass of the clubhead do the work for you.  You will be amazed on how much the ball will run by using a simple soft chipping stroke with your 3 wood.
