A few of the most popular golf courses in Orlando will play host to U.S. Open Local Qualifiers this week. Timacuan Golf Club hosts the first of these local qualifying tournaments on Monday, May 11th. It marks the fifth time in six years that Timacuan has hosted this event.
Shingle Creek Golf Club will host a local qualifying tournament on Wednesday, May 12th. Designed by David Harmon, Shingle Creek Golf Club was recognized as the best golf course in Orlando 2015. Shingle Creek is consistently one of the best conditioned golf courses in Orlando.
Southern Dunes Golf Club in Haines City, FL hosts a local qualifying tournament on Thursday, May 14th. Designed by Steve Smyers, Southern Dunes is nationally renowned and consistently ranks as on of the top golf courses in Orlando. With over 180 bunkers carved out of the rolling terrain, Southern Dunes will provide a stern test of golf.
Orange Tree Golf Club also hosts a local qualifying event on Tuesday, May 19th. A total of 84 players is expected to tee it up at each local qualifying site for an estimated five or six players advancing to the sectional qualifier, with the hope of advancing to the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay Golf Course in University Place, Washington.
Local qualifiers will advance to sectional qualifying at The Bear’s Club in Jupiter, Florida.
Nestled among 369 sandy acres near the Atlantic Ocean, legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus transformed the native environment into a championship layout that features 102 strategically placed bunkers. The design of The Bear’s Club was inspired by the bunkers at Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Australia, which Nicklaus visited when he captained the 1998 United States Presidents Cup Team. A collection of medium-to-large greens demand precision, as many of the complexes are rounded off at the edges and feed into hollows and chipping areas.
This is the first time The Bear's Club, which opened in 1999, is hosting U.S. Open sectional qualifying.
